Introduction

Hyper Media Director will automatically discover the HMP devices on the same local network (i.e. LAN) as the PC running HMD and list them in the "My Devices" collection. HMD Professional lists all HMP devices, while HMD Lite is limited to 10 HMP devices.

  • When devices are not discovered automatically, you can manually add an HMP to the list in order to publish your project to it.

HMD does not do any scanning itself, instead it queries the Bonjour service on the PC to get the list of available devices. Then HMD compares the results with its internal list, updates the status of the existing HMPs and adds the newly discovered ones.

  • An exception to this is when the "Discover Devices" option is used, however this is a legacy feature which will be removed in the near future.

Discovery icon legend

  • Green tick with small "A" symbol = Device has been auto-discovered by HMD and is available.
    • If the "A" is missing, that means the HMP has been manually added or has been previously moved into a collection of devices.
  • Red cross (X) = Device has previously been discovered, but is not currently accessible.
  • Exclamation / Warning symbol in red triangle = Device is in Safe mode.
  • First-aid cross / Red plus sign = Device is in Recovery mode.
  • Yellow question mark = Device has been discovered as an unknown type of WebDAV server.
    • If the device is actually an HMP, make sure you have the latest version of HMD.

Device names

  • HMD will use the device name as configured on the HMP using Control Center.
  • In some network configurations, it may be necessary to add devices manually. In this case the device name will be automatically updated by HMD when the device is visible, using the Bonjour protocol. If the HMP is never discovered by Bonjour, then you need to rename it manually in HMD (you can ignore the warning and proceed with renaming the device).

Copying devices

The list of devices in the "My Devices" tab can be copied to another machine:

On HMD, to export devices:

  1. Open My Devices
  2. Select the devices to be exported. Devices and/or collections can be exported.
  3. Using the right-click menu, select Export
  4. Select the location to save the generated XML file

To import devices:

  1. Open My Devices
  2. Drag and drop the XML file from Explorer.
  3. All the devices will be added to HMD

Note that this procedure will only add devices, and not remove already-configured devices.

Removing devices

  • Since HMD uses the devices list returned by Bonjour to update "My Devices", removing an HMP from the "My Devices" is only having a temporary effect (until the next update) and this should be used only when you have actually removed the HMP from your network.
    • Removing a device from "My Devices" is safe and has only a local effect on your PC, meaning that no action is performed on the actual device.
  • If you don't want to see a device into "My Device", you can do the followings:
    1. Create a collection and named it for instance "Not used", "Recycled Bin" etc.
    2. Move that device into this collection.
  • If for any reason you cannot remove a device from HMD, you can do the followings:
    1. Close HMD.
    2. Open Explorer.
    3. Open the Local Application Data folder (see Finding logs and config files)
    4. Go to the "Spinetix\HMD\My Devices" folder.
    5. Delete the device files in this folder, along with any Collection folders.

Troubleshooting

  • Problems related to discovering devices:
    • If you cannot see more than 10 devices in HMD, you are probably running HMD Lite - you need HMD Professional to see all the HMPs within your network.
    • If no devices are discovered, check the Bonjour service is installed and started. If it is not, reinstall the latest version of HMD.
  • If you can see a device appearing automatically in "My Devices" but you cannot publish to it, please check your Proxy settings.
  • "Error while listing collection" - one of the cases when this error might appear is when trying to open an unreachable device (marked with a red cross) in HMD. Make sure that your computer is able to access that device before trying to access it. See also the HMD error messages page.
  • "This version of HMD can only manage local resources" - HMD returns this error when trying to connect to an HMP and there is a proxy / firewall / router between the PC running HMD and the HMP, that returns an unexpected response, for instance:
    • An HTML page with some error when trying to connect to the port 81 of the HMP - this is not an answer from an HMP, so HMD treats it as a remote WebDAV server and returns this error.
    • The HMP response, but with the HTTP header changed - in this case HMD no longer recognize the player as an HMP and returns an error.
